The 2026 Quality Foods Sand Sculpting Competition in Parksville, British Columbia, showcased the incredible talent of sand sculptors from around the world. This year's theme, 'Beauties and Beasts', inspired artists to create stunning pieces that captured the essence of nature and its wonders. Among the impressive entries, two sculptures stood out: 'Touched by the Beast' by Hanneke Supply and Helena Bangert, and 'Walls' by Abe Waterman.
A Nature-Inspired Masterpiece
Hanneke Supply and Helena Bangert's sculpture, 'Touched by the Beast', is a powerful commentary on our relationship with nature. Supply, from the Netherlands, explained that the sculpture represents the idea of connecting with nature rather than being glued to screens. The centerpiece is a monster, symbolizing the beauty of nature, with a little girl on its lap. The monster, with a butterfly in its hand, attempts to capture the girl's attention, encouraging us to appreciate the natural world.
Bangert, originally from Belgium but now living in the Netherlands, described the process as challenging. The duo spent time discussing their ideas and then faced a day of intense sand sculpting. Despite the hardships, their collaboration resulted in a harmonious piece, emphasizing the importance of unity and connection with nature.
Breaking Down Barriers
Abe Waterman's 'Walls' took the single sculptor category by storm. Starting with a simple concept of the yin yang symbol, Waterman's sculpture evolved into a powerful message of breaking down barriers. The centerpiece of the sculpture is a bulldozer smashing through a wall, symbolizing the removal of the barriers we create between ourselves. Waterman, from Caledonia, P.E.I., believes that this simple yet impactful message can foster acceptance and closeness among people.
The competition, unfortunately, faced an unexpected challenge on its third day. Several sculptures, including those in the doubles category, were vandalized overnight. This incident left the organizers and sculptors disheartened, but the community's response was remarkable. The Parksville Beach Festival Society decided to divide the doubles prize money among all the pairs, demonstrating resilience and support.
The sand sculptures will be on display from July 13 to August 16, inviting visitors to vote for their favorite. The exhibition is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., with a suggested donation of $5 per person. This event not only showcases artistic talent but also highlights the importance of community and the appreciation of nature's beauty.
